The competence in software technology (CST) is a countrywide examination. This test is conducted by the C-DAC. (National Centre for Software Technology (NCST)).
This entrance exam is conducted to provide standardized scores to candidates which, they can use while applying for employment in the IT industry, to provide support to IT industry in identifying suitable candidates for recruitment, to shortlist candidates for interviews, for employment at C-DAC, Mumbai, Electronics City Bangalore and other centers, To select students for C-DAC Mumbai and Electronics City, Bangalore's post-graduate diploma courses i.e. PGDST (Post-Graduate Diploma in Software Technology) and FPGDST (Full-time Post-Graduate Diploma in Advanced Software Technology).
The examination is held once in each year, usually in the month of January-February. The CST examination tests a candidate for theoretical knowledge and practical skills. It is conducted in three different levels. i.e. Level E, Level D and Level G.
The duration of each paper will be 1 hour.
All questions will be of objective type with 4 alternative answers.
Each correct answer will carry 3 marks.
Each wrong answer will carry 1 negative mark. If more than one choice is marked, the answer will be treated as wrong.
All questions are to be answered by choosing the most suitable of the given alternatives. If the candidate feels that the exact answer is not given in the alternatives, candidate should choose the best available answer.
It is likely that candidates may not find enough time to answer all questions. Since all questions are not of the same level of complexity, it is advisable to attempt the easier questions first. Failure to do so is the most common cause of poor performance.

The minimum eligibility requirement for appearing in Competence in Software Technology (CST) examination is a graduation degree certificate under any recognized university with not less than 50% of marks in aggregate.
Computer science background will be given preference. Final year students can also eligible to apply for this test.
